Madrigal de las Altas Torres

Madrigal de las Altas Torres is the birthplace of Isabel la Católica, located in the north of the province of Ávila, in the heart of the Castilian high plain. The town has preserved its medieval character remarkably well: broad town walls, gates, towers and quiet streets that still convey the atmosphere of the fifteenth century.

Isabel was born on 22 April 1451 at a quarter to five in the morning in the Palacio de San Juan. The building is now a convent, the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, and can be visited daily. In the patio one can still imagine what court life must have looked like during the years Isabel grew up here. In the square behind the convent stands a large statue of Isabel, highlighting her role as queen and reformer of Castile.

She was baptised in the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, where the original baptismal font can still be seen. It is a simple yet impressive historical object: a nearly tangible reference to the very first moments of her life.

Madrigal de las Altas Torres is a place where time seems to stand still. The well‑preserved walls, the quiet streets and the historical buildings offer a rare and authentic impression of the Castile in which Isabel spent her childhood.
